HL2 Death Match Tactics

Post by Johnny X »

Dunno if this'll be appreciated but whilst passing the time before re-building the old pc I've been getting into HL2DM and generally getting my ass slammed. Never been much of an on-line DM'er but I'm quite enjoying it.

Any veteran FPS gamers amongst you who fancy passing on a few hints ? Folks just seem to be way faster, so is it down to skill or having the right cheats activated  ?

Or should I go and get some praccy at the local paint ball arena :p

I think it is practice, but one thing i did learn while playing Norbs in UT2003 is splash damage. I was shooting him at chest height and missing most times, but he was dropping them at my feet which caused me damage even if he didn't directly hit me. But i guess that only works with some weapons.

I'm cack at onlike kickups too. I like Call of Duty but I spot someone and a nanosecond later I'm dead. Even if I creep up on someone from behind I can let a whole magazine go and nothing happens. They turn round and bang! I'm history!

:007:

Haven't tried HL2 online yet. I don't want to spoil seeing any potential weapons I might get later in single player.

Yep. Fire up the Steam thingy and select updates I think. It's about a 30Mb download.

Ah, so it is. I'll fix that in a sec.
EDIT: done. Missed a line out on getting the flags back in.

ahh..deathmatch.....most lovable form of FPS. I remember days online at quakeworld playing hours of quake1arena. Well..the best tips i can give is first raise the sensitivity of your mouse to high levels. So much that a quick flick of the mouse sends you 180. This way you can react faster to shots. You will get used to the high sensitivity soon enough so dont worry at first. Afterwards get used to the game and how people use the map. Try to anticipate movement, and if your using a splash damage weapon, there is a higher probability of causing damage if you use surroundings. Just make sure it explodes in the vicinity of the target and you'll be fine. At best you can score multi-kills. Umm...nothing else i can say but KEEP MOVING AROUND STRAFE EVERYWHERE!. and oh yeah.....practise like a madman

Cheers all, specially spoonsports. I've got the mouse at the highest sensitivity setting but still seem to get nailed from all sides, but I guess its just a free for all anyway. What annoys me are the campers that sit behind the re-spawn points, as soon as you re-incarnate you got a bullet in the head and you're in a heap on the floor again :D

So practice looks like the answer really. Back to the Killing Fields :bang: (well after all, MY BRAIN HURTS  )

Before LFS I spent loads of time playing Medal of Honour Allied Assualt and Operation Flashpoint.

Some tips from me.

Learn the maps first - Play in single player if you can and search hard for all the dark/hidden corners, high sniper spots etc etc. Learn all the corridors and where they go and any short cuts etc. If you know a map inside out you can usually guess were people are without seeing them. Or you could spectate people and see where they go as well.

Vary your movements and learn to predict others - Don't stand still move/strafe/jump/duck/hide etc. If you know a map really well, you can actually predict where people are going to hide or run to next to duck your fire, or to flank you. Flanking is very important to. Don't stay in one spot to long. Your weapon gives you away once fired and people will be quick to figure out were you are before you know it. Reload in places that provide cover as well.

Aim small miss small - Yep, that's quoted from the movie the Patriot and actually is good advice. If your using a SMG or MG weapon aim low (legs/nuts), the recoil will usually kick the gun up to aim around the torso area, provided you are not very good atm countering it with the mouse ;). If you are, aim at the upper torso and you can get a lucky head shot :)

Urm, theres probably more to give - but I'm no longer on hold ;)

Yeah death match does get boring after a while. I prefer team matches or objective matches :)

Haven't heard of that one Smasha.

I actually got banned for the first time last night from a server in MOHAA. Ever since getting DSL my kills have more than doubled. I was kicking butt on one server, not my fault people moved slow and predictable, and I was carving them up with the M1 Garand rifle. I was sniping snipers with a standard rifle and it was loads of fun. Anywho, after about 20 kills to the next dudes 10 or so, an admin instantly banned me for suspected use of cheats before I knew was happening. :rage: :finger:

The stupid people where crawling from behind walls that they had just hidden behind. I had my crosshair sitting in the one spot waiting for that moment, and as soon as they sllloooowwwwyyyy poked out from the wall - BANG - DEAD! Wheres the cheat in that? lol.

So then I joined a team server that had people playing that are actually really damn good and I got my ARSE kicked. Yet, I never once suspected any of them for cheating just because they were beating me. Damn the man!

i'm not surprised you haven't heard of it :(

hasn't been hyped like someother titles, and is probably more a niche title. for me its redefined team-based tactical shooters, as its not just a run and gun affair, you can spend your time sneaking through the grass if you prefer :tilt:

when they release the updated demo (playable online) early next year, check it out

oh, i should mention ... it supports up to 150 ppl :eyepop:

Ooo sounds good  , Part reason I enojoyed Flashpoint heaps was that its tactical and not just run around like mad shooting.

I've never really gotten into any FPS online, but that sounds more my style. I'm not really a fan of deathmatch. Give us a yell when that demo comes out D' :D

Here's my ultimate guide to winning DM thingys.

1. Don't get shot. This may be hard, so try and avoid getting shot. At worst get a bit hurt.

2. Make sure you shoot the other guy. This should kill him almost everytime.

3. Use a really cool name. AdD lEttErS and No.'s to your nAm3, and make it kind of scary like DeViL AsSaSiN. This intimidates the other guy, they will want to team up with you if you have a cool name.

If you follow these simple instructions you should see remarkable results. Matches will be won and girls will be swooning around you wanting to make sweet love to you.
