I recently bought two 19" Samsung 940Bs, and I think whether you want dual screens or one widescreen depends pretty much only on what you do with your computer. I do a lot of coding, browsing, email, wasting time (aka irc) etc and therefore really like the two monitor approach - being able to maximise two apps at once and having two desktops visible at once is a nice way to work (maybe you can get a widescreen to work this way?). Widescreen might be better for.... movies? Gaming perhaps?

Whirlpool just finished a group buy of the 24"
See here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... m?t=309888
Last I heard the price was around $1450 (inc GST + Delivery).
I'd suggest staying tune there and waiting for the next group buy - I'm sure there will be more of them...

A friend of mine bought a Dell 24" and didn't wait for the bulk-buy, so she ended up paying about $1350 for it (I think). She finally got it 4 weeks after ordering it.... it was only meant to take 1 week.
It's a great looking monitor.... Nice high native resolution which is great for desktop and gaming. Most games seem to work on it. I wouldn't buy anything less than a 7900GT (about $500) for it. Need something with a fair bit of grunt to render 1920x1200. If you're spending $1500 on a display, you shouldn't be too fussed about a $500 video card though
The only bad thing is that 1 dead pixel showed up within an hour of use.
She's debating whether or not to return it... whether it's worth the hassle. It's not in the middle and it's a dark one... but still annoying.
Given the cash, I'd buy one

Not worth it. I've got 2 LCDs, one has a single stuck blue pixel, the other has a group of about 3 dead pixels in the same spot. Annoying, sure, but after a week or two you don't notice it. Kind of like the 2 thin lines across Trinitron CRT monitors and TVs.Pinger$ wrote:The only bad thing is that 1 dead pixel showed up within an hour of use.

The Dell 24" certainly grab the rave reviews. If I had $1400 for a monitor, that would definitely be the one for me. Since I don't, I went and grabbed a 19" Chi Mei widescreen, it's a 1440 X 900 native resolution, 8ms display. It blows away my old crappy 19"CRT with ease. It was only $350 too which is pretty damn good. I've only had it a couple of days, but no pixels gone bye byes yet.

If you watch a lot of tv or movies then I'd say definately get a widescreen, it makes a huge difference to widescreen content and LFS is a lot better in widescreen as well.
I've got the 20" Dell and whilst I'm happy with it (colour reproduction and brightness is fantastic) it does have a fair amount of backlight bleed. I can easily live with it but for some people it would be a deal breaker and from what I've read online it's quite common and replacing it might not help, the next one you get might be the same.
As far as I know the 24" doesn't have the same problem.
In the end though I'm happy I bought it, it is 10x better than my old 19" CRT in every way making the problems it has seem minor. Widescreen is definately the way to go

Sarsi, a mate the other day was telling me about the bleed on the 20" Dell, he said he read somewhere that it can be fixed. If yours is out of warranty it might be worth investigating, something about placing some black tape across the backlight at the botton of the panel behind the bezel he reckons does the trick. Could all be BS though.

Yeah, I was.... LFS isn't 'too' video card intensive, so bumping the res up shouldn't hurt it too much. Just make sure you turn your AA (and AF) back a bit (or off if you have to).
It'll look nicer than 1600x1200 all stretched... rule of thumb is to at least pick a res at the same aspect ratio. 1600x1200 = 4:3 1920x1200 = 8:5
1280x800 is an 8:5 ratio that you may be able to select, which shouldn't look too bad. Worth a shot anyway.
Sometimes the rules don't apply tho, it's whatever works best for you

Oh.. i thought i was running in the right aspect ratio, doh! I meant to have it on 1680x1050, which is what i've selected now. thats the lowest 8:5 ratio I could find.
Since I thought I WAS in that ratio.. I thought you were saying that it'd run smoother in a higher res just because its 'native' - didnt make much sense to me
Should be all good now. Thanks
edit: damn, the road is so thin now haha

We were discussing posting your racing rig / setup in another thread, so maybe the screen screenshot can go here as well.
