Getting AVI files to play on TV

Post by Cutter »

My sons finished a long term video assignment for school.
We had thought we would have a computer to play it on
but they've all been booked, so only TV's are available.

So, if we use the PS2 to play a DVD it should work.

Any idea how we can get an AVI file into a DVD playable format.

I'm sure I could "aquire" the required conversion software,
its just knowing what formats are playable on standard TV's via the PS2

By the way do DVD's generally play "+" or "-" discs.

As a last resort my video card supprts output to TV so I could make a
video tape version, but that would mean a swag of mucking around.
And I'm sure I wont have all the various cable I'll need.
So any idea's welcome.

No idea.

You can't "borrow" someone's laptop to play it on?
- When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.
- If youre paddling upstream in a canoe and a wheel falls off, how many pancakes fit in a doghouse? None! Icecream doesn't have bones!!!

Google DVD Santa, or Nero Vision....

They'll convert almost any video format into standard DVD video, and can then burn it.

Go to the good guys and buy a DIVX compatible DVD player...You can then just burn a data disc to play AVI's...Woundnt have thought it would cost you more that 60-80 bucks...

I am assuming you need another DVD player of course...

Worked a treat, thanks guys.

first tried Plastik8's way, but the free version of DVD santa left a big watermark.
And Nero vision seemed for too complex for my small brain.

Then found a generic video converter, got it to Avi 2 version, then
TMPEG DVD author worked after I got the framerate and quality settings sorted.

Thanks mighty ARSE brains.

All recent (last 3 or 4 years) DVD players should read both DVD+R and DVD-R discs fine, including PS2s.

Nero is fast and dirty. It will do it pretty quickly though On the old PC, which was shit, it would take 4 hours to creat a DVD. This is in stark contrast to the almost 18 hours it would take with DVD authoring software. It should be significantly faster on a good PC. Alternatively, you can just use a stand alone DVD player that will play AVI files (most of them do these days) they only cost $100 ish and are very handy
