Was thinking today, people have all sorts of gear that maybe some of the other blokes might be interested in. I know the Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk II lense is in most people camera bags, but what other gens are there out there. List your gear and give it a  rating out of 5. Then others can get an idea on the good and the bad stuff.

My stuff.

Body : Canon 5D

Lenses : Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk II      No longer part of my gear.

Canon 70-200mm f/4L     No longer part of my gear. macca owns it now.

Canon 17-40mm f/4L     No longer part of my gear. macca owns it now.

Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM :

Body : Canon 400D (For the price range that it lands in)

Now have the 40D, big step up 4.5/5 (FF would be nice though), my son now has the 400D, he's happy

Lenses : Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk II (Especially considering it's price)

Canon 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye (Awesome little lens, if you like the fisheye effect, great for shooting from the hip)

Sigma 10-22 (My lens of the moment, recently purchased from Norbs)

Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (The general walkaround lens)

Canon 430EX Flash (Not as good as I would have thought, should have gotten the 580EX which I may very well be doing as the 430EX has somehow disappeared - don't ask cos I don't know) Frown    Now have the 580EX, have never seen the 430 again

Canon 70-200L f4, got this from Norbs as well as the 1.4 extender, I really like this lens, f2.8 would be nicerer though :)

Canon 17-40L f4, also from Norbs, am disapointed with this lens, much rather use the Sigma 10-20, (bang for buck a great lens) so I think it's just a range thing for me as in I prefer UWA, maybe on a full frame I would like it more, might be for sale soon

Thought i would sticky this thread for some of the new guys, and add some of the stuff I have got.

Canon 24-70 f/2.8L      A ball tearer of a lens.
Canon 80-200 f/2.8L      What a ripper for an older lens. Focus is slower, but it gives such crisp images.

The 80 - 200 f/2.8 is Canons "Ninja" lense Sin. Its old and no longer made, but is considered by many to be canons finest lense.

ok my gear list;

Canon 40D body 4.5/5 for the price I cant fault it, just wish it was full frame

Canon 20d body 5/5 you can grab one of these things for 500 bucks nowadays, Ive thrashed mine and still comes back for more

Canon bg-e2 battery pack 4/5 never need to change a battery again!

Canon 24-70 f2.8l 4/5 great lens once again, just dosent seem as sharp as my 70-200 :(

Canon 70-200 f2.8l 5/5 seriously sharp lens, fast focus and I love it, bit heavy but that aint an issue for me

Canon 100 f2.8 macro 4.5/5 great lens sharp, L lens sharp! a little slow on the focusing

Canon 50 f1.8 4.5/5 the nifty fifty, great lens for the price, focusing is abit slow and loud and feels abit plasticy but a sharp ass lens none the less

Canon 580ex 2 5/5 great flash does everything i could possibly ever want

Canon cp-e4 5/5 (battery pack for the 580) I could not live without this little device, makes burst framing indoor events soooo easily, no mroe waiting for the flash to recycle!

Gary Fong light spear 4/5 brilliant little thing that really defuse the flash, not as good as proper studio lighting as the ads seem to make you think but damm good difuser none the less but its abit big and hard to carry in my bags

Crumpler kachki outpost 4/5 the biggest backpack bag crumpler makes, just fits in all my gear would be nicer if it had a few more pockets

Crumpler 7 million dollar home 5/5 great bags fits alot more in it than it looks and dosent look like a camera bag at all!

Optically, the 17-40 kills the 10-20. The colours aren't real flash on the 10-20, well compared to the 17-40. But it isnt a real UWA on a cropped body, so I can see what you mean.

I don't own a Tamron lens so I can't comment on those, but I do have a Tokina 12-24 F4 and a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 and I'm very happy with them, good bang for your buck, can't really compare to Canon's L series glass but then they don't cost the earth either.

If you are looking at a particular lens Sam, head over to the POTN forums and register, then check out the thread below, the lens you might have in mind may have some sample pictures to look at.

Edit: There is a thread with sample images from that lens over at the POTN forums Sam. :)

i have a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and personally i love the lens. I cant tell you how the AF is like though cos my stupid d40x body's AF only works on a select few lens. But i mean build quality wise, it has probably been my most knocked around lens, and probably my most used, and I have had no issues with it.

Hmm interesting, good to have a read through that forum, thanks for the replies...and the links shonky :)

I want a lens that is an awsome all rounder, that has a similar f-stop to the nifty fifty so that I could goto events and get shots still with the narrow dof etc, image quality must be high and sharp though.....or I want a fantastic landscape lens, any suggestions?

Bought this sucker the other day... Headin up to Perth Zoo on the weekend (weather permitting) so should be a good chance to get a bunch of shots :D

Image

Love the way it "slings" round to your front, unzip the top and shoot away, then put the camera back in and sling it back roound onto your back. Perfect for me actually. Only drawback is I might have to do some modification in the future if I wanna strap a tripod to it.

Where did you get that Fandango? That looks great, is there somewhere online I can check it out. I'm in the market for a new bag.

lowepro.com righty, all the info you need. I think Knappo has that bag too, i know he has one of the slingshots anyway, I got mine from Camerasdirect.com.au but also check out digitalrev.com a look too. they are usually cheaper but they didn't have what i wanted in stock at the time.

Yep what Hz said. I saw shopped round online just a little and the cheapest I found was $119.00 plus shipping. Then went in to the local Camera House here and got them down to $139.00. Turns out shipping was 30 buks so I saved in the end anyway hehe. I'm sure you could get it cheaper if you look around... I was just impatient lol. I just love that you can carry your cam round all day and not have to have it swinging from your neck the whole time (which scares me lol) and at the same time you've got easy access to it without even taking the bag off and putting it in the dirt. I was originally looking for a backpack like Hz's (which looks great by the way) but settled on this one.
Here's a vid showin how it works.

(I also comes with another strap that wraps round the other side of your body for more stability if your goin rugged I guess... seems to be nice and stable as is anyway in my opinion.

Fandsy the Singshot will last you a fair while, well, assuming you don't all of a sudden go ballistic with this hobby. I had outgrown my bag, which was a little lowepro shoulderbag that housed the body (with a small lens) and 2 other lenses. It did not like my Battery Grip one bit and i had to squeeze the bigger in there (oh, by the way, a battery grip should be your next investment). I had seen knappo's Slingshot and really liked the idea, in hindsight i wish i got one of those to start with. The main reason i didn't go for one this time around is that I couldn't see the value on spending that much on a minimal gain from my recent bag, yes the slingshot was a little bigger, but not big enough to warrant spending the money on it. Hence why i went the Trekker.

But, I would by far recommend the Slingshots to anyone for a 1st bag. They look pretty awesome.
