As to what the points thing is now, I have no idea. As Scottie said, in the early days of LFS, you used your points to unlock cars within LFS, but that has since been shitcanned. (I'm thinking S1 days, they made the change in S2 IIRC.)
Worst case scenario, make a post on the LFS forum and ask in there. (Just make sure you ask in the right section.. they can be a narky bunch of fuckers in there.)
