sideways thinking...

Post by Scottie »

I regret missing the Open Wheel series, and look forward to getting into a cockpit again.

But then I had a different thought...

What if, either AAL or MNR or whoever, ran a Drift season?
It would be something different for most blokes around here, and with the same company that you'd find in the league, a good way to learn a different style of driving.

I'm sure insim has some sort of drift scoring system to cater.

It wouldn't want to be a big season, maybe 4 rounds? I don't know if there's a particular drift race format we'd want to follow though.

what do we rekon?

AAD tried it, it failed.. The Insim Scoring systems are not very realistic and dont always reward the better drifter. And A lot of people have no interest in drifting at all so you'll alienate quite a few.

Maybe it could work as a one night event or something, in tournament style, but i dont think it will as a season.

I agree HZ.... prolly no good as a season, but as a '1 off' it could work really well and i'd be interested. :)

I can't drift :(
Still I voted yes as it would give me the chance to try learn it but I agree with Hz & SE1Z it should be kept as a fun one of event or a small number of events spread out, possibly used as series fill-ins.

Yep, we tried and failed.

the insim thing just doesnt work well enough to judge a comp on it. and judges was just too much work

Sideways is fun... I prefer sideways to the word drift. :P

The LX4 is quite the fun car for some sideways action.

Speaking of drift, I watched that FnF Tokyo Drift the other night... there goes 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

Yea the insim is available but so easily flawed.

Drifting really is a tough thing to run as a competition, I watch drift dvds etc. and I can never really see the judges angle, it's really about who doesn't lose it. And in LFS with cars like the XRT it's near impossible to actually lose it unless you are 150% going for broke.

in my opinion it's awesome fun for a general lounging drifting session where you can maybe organise some drift trains or 'battles' etc.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you finally have enough horsepower.

Angle and speed are the two factors... judging them is the hard part...

Like we've all said, the insim thing is flawed... which leaves judging, but that takes time...

Best to make the event not too serious and just take everybody who's spectating the pair running for opinions and commentary
Would be good fun running it that way :)

Another option is maybe a fixed set which makes it harder to drift. Or maybe a specific car thats harder to drift too. And Insim isn't entirely bad, could be used TOGETHER with judges. A mixture of both could work.

lx4 ftw... :D Good times :P

Only problem doing that would be for the people that are new to LFS drifting, a tricky car and set might just be a little too tough.

I might be mistaken, but have ARSE/AAL done a rally track division yet? Not that I'd be in for it, mostly because I'm shit at all the rally tracks LFS has to offer, more of an observation. Would there be any interest?

A few years ago, Latch, BreaknecK and myself organised a Rally competition whereby the winner was the racer that had the lowest accurred 'stage' times over various rally tracks using the RB4. Was fairly fun as well.

I'm sure it can be done and quite easily with the existing AAL website. =]

Perhaps in the off-season of the AAL, we might be able to run something akin to this with say.. 3 rounds? I'd probably have a go at it, just for the sake of testing just how shit I am.. the whole drift thing I'm really not in to.. but dirt tracks would hold a certain interest, if for nothing else but to see if all those years living on dirt roads I learnt anything about driving. :D
(I lived most of my life on farms, grew up driving on dirt tracks and paddocks, started driving at the tender age of 6.. transferring that to a sim-based game could be interesting.)

What say you.. can we do this?*

I love the rally tracks in lfs, just wish the large GTR's had the option of rally tyres. The road cars are good but with big power its heaps of fun, I've done it a few times in the FXR on slicks with all the tyre pressure out but its still pretty hard to control.

Not sure when the next version of LFStweak will be released, but if it includes the option of using rally tyres on the GTR's it could be a good for a fun race :)

A dirt track enduro with the road cars would also be heaps of fun, maybe as a one off event where the rules on making contact are toned down a bit. Make it a bit like the basher style enduros they run up the bush :)

I was thinking something like this:

Users sign up for a race on a rally super stage or circuit etc. Then you have 10 mins in which to make a set from scratch using the default rally set and go set a time. or something similar then the top 10 go on a knock out competition style, where 1 person does 1\2 of the track and the other does the other half etc and see who wins :D

or do something that chaz has been suggesting for years...same setup races where an independant person makes a set for everyone when the event starts (no practise time, not even the track would be known until everyone is on the server) which must be used for a 10 laps sprint race

ah love rally, I think super stages would be awesome. Design a circuit on BL using the circuit editor and have it like that.

I've suggested that a few times too, I reckon it would be great fun (even though I'd suck at it :))

hmm.. just poking my head in here.. I do recall not so long ago that FMR announced a Race of Arsepions, which was a knockout tournament on 2 car super special stages.

That event pulled about 5 people that showed interest. So where were you guys then? I'd be more than happy to re-kindle it. I have all the layouts ready.

Also spoon, remember the FMR rally of blackwood, you ended up doing alright on that didnt u? I could maybe look at doing something like that again
