Its not the accent so much as the way its used. Australian film more often than not, seems to go for a "hyper" accent; that "Steve Erwin" lint. It just seems over done and terrible.
Rubbish once again. Are you telling me in movies like Lantana, Look Both Ways, Angel Baby, Shine and CrackerJack that people are putting on a forced Aussie accent? Sure, Steve Irwin's movie went over the top, but that was him, and the older classics, Their A Weird Mob springs to mind, certainly sound a bit over the top, but back then that was pretty much how people spoke.

Being the good pom that you are Nige, seems to force you to hate any thing Aussie. Give it a break. Considering the size and the funding of our film industry, we make some cracking movies. Then again, your love of 1920's German movies might mean you are one of those elite art house lovers of obscure crap that 99% of the population wouldn't piss on. :)

I did say "more often than not" and "seems too" rather than all Australian film have the "Erwin lint". And art is good. :D

I guess the point of my original post was that US films and Foreign films often do much better in this country than Australian Films. I'm not saying they are better or worse they just don't do as well.Generally the only type of film that sees any sort of wide ranging success are the comedies where the Aussie accent is laid on thick. No sense in getting worked up about it Norbs, that's just the way it is..

I wonder if an explanation is that most Aussie talent heads for the money in the US, like our lot tend to. On DVD extras which include interviews with the production team, more than half of them seem to be either Aussies, NZers or Brits.

  • The Devil's Playground
    Razorback
    Gettin' Square
    Walkabout
    Umm...
Kind of ran out after that. I didn't really want to include Gallipoli or Breaker Morant because I think there have been better films on the subject.

I liked Dirty Deeds for a bit of prankery and The Castle and The Dish were both entertaining. Couldn't be bothered with stuff like Muriel's Wedding (despite the awesome performance by Jeanie Drynan). Anything by Baz Luhrmann bores me stupid.

Despite its trashy style, I was tempted to add The Cars that Ate Paris simply because to my mind, so many themes are echoed in the Mad Max series. Apart from that, I didn't like it that much. Trash only has some appeal to me (I know you like it Nige) and Razorback fulfils that quite well.

Not sure I've seen another movie about Breaker Morant, so I'm going to say:

1. The odd angry shot
2. Breaker Morant
3. Mad Max
4. ...daylight
5. ...the "vibe" scene from The Castle

IMDB says there have been some 3,400+ Australian feature movies. Bit of an indictment really.

Dammit R8 - I was coming here to post exactly that! Great film, great pacing and a fantastic long range shoot-out.

That's a classic scene - 'bones of my arse'. Pity the rest of the film isn't as good as that bit.
