Top 5 Aussie Films
Nige makes a good point, there are a few good Aussie films around, but unlikley to make the list of top 5 greatest in an overall capacity.
Not sure I can get 5 because generally i hate Aussie films but there are a few eceptions...
not in any order...
1. Crackerjack (OK that one is in order)
2. The Dish
3. Romper Stomper
4. Dead Calm
5. Gallipoli

Like the fairy says, 10 movies Nige, and the Castle doesn't get a mention. And you are the movie expert? No Priscilla, Storm Boy, Sum of Us, Rabbit proof Fence or Muriel? What about Breaker Morant, Sirens (mmm boobies), My Brilliant Career or Alvin Purple?
1. The Castle
2. Lantana
3. Hercules Returns
4. Priscilla
5. Look Both Ways.

Re: Top 5 Aussie Films
Can't beleive I am going to say this but...
I agree with Nige.. (may god have mercy on my soul )
The Castle does not rate in my top 100 Australian Movies... I spent 90 minutes shaking my head... tried a second time and gave up on it. it is just far to easy to make a movie about Australians being basic... All I could think of was, how dare they insult kingswood country like this...
Use the same lines and add ted and thel's voices
Ted Bullpit: "What are these called Thel?"
Thelma: "Rissoles Dear"
not to mention theme quotes...
Money of the fridge
Tell Him he's dreaming
Having said that, I repect peoples right to have enjoyed it, I am even half glad as it clearly offsets my misunderstanding of it...
I can however sit and watch Crackerjack over and over and over again...

Re: Top 5 Aussie Films
I am not very big on Australian film; I tend not to like them. Its very rare for me to like a comedy, It has to be something very special for me to even watch it. 9 out of 10 Aussie comedies are proper crap. The Castle does present a pretty interesting view of Australian culture, but is pretty average as a comedy. Only one Australian film has ever made me laugh and that Hercules Returns (and I have that in my list) I Hate Storm Boy. Bloody film traumatised me as a kid. Never really got over it. Priscilla almost got in there, but fell over when Bill Hunter shows up in it. Breaker Marant is a good film, so is The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith and a rather spooky film called Patrick. The Cars that Ate Paris is also a good film, as is Head On (actually Head On should be in the top five). But the films I went for are both iconic and something a little different.

Re: Top 5 Aussie Films
I doubt I could list five but Chopper is great fun. I thought it was very inventive and memorable.
One of my favourite films is a bit of low budget Aussie silliness called Bad Eggs. I'd never heard of it and just caught it on TV one time, and it really appealed to my sense of humour and I was chuckling all the way through. I really liked the spoofing of action movie cliches, like when a car crashes into a gas container; the two fellas jump out of the car and do a heroic dive in slow motion to escape, and then it doesn't explode so they just get up and feel a bit silly.
Even the DVD case is quite funny too, taking the piss out of normal DVD extras. I've been trying to find it in the UK but with no luck.

The castle is great, except i cannot watch it anymore. My english teacher forced us to watch it 5 times in 2 weeks in highschool. got sick of it real quick.
Chopper is awesome.
Mad Max 2
I remember this crap called Metal Skin, which was just bad. It had a nascar in it at the end so i was happy.

Re: Top 5 Aussie Films
The Boys is an amazing film,
I don't rate is much but it is a classic for different reasons, muriels wedding.
Idiot Box is one I really like too.
A sunday too far away is also another significant film.
Man from Snowy river.
There are many, many good aussie films that will never make it big, but that sort of gives them their own charm. It is odd, but I think most australians have issues listening to aussie accents in films. Just the way it is.

Its not the accent so much as the way its used. Australian film more often than not, seems to go for a "hyper" accent; that "Steve Erwin" lint. It just seems over done and terrible.Righteous wrote: It is odd, but I think most australians have issues listening to aussie accents in films.

Re: Top 5 Aussie Films
Rubbish once again. Are you telling me in movies like Lantana, Look Both Ways, Angel Baby, Shine and CrackerJack that people are putting on a forced Aussie accent? Sure, Steve Irwin's movie went over the top, but that was him, and the older classics, Their A Weird Mob springs to mind, certainly sound a bit over the top, but back then that was pretty much how people spoke.fourthof5 wrote:Its not the accent so much as the way its used. Being the good pom that you are Nige, seems to force you to hate any thing Aussie. Give it a break. Considering the size and the funding of our film industry, we make some cracking movies. Then again, your love of 1920's German movies might mean you are one of those elite art house lovers of obscure crap that 99% of the population wouldn't piss on.
