New Car - Suggestions?
I don't do a massive amount. Did 15,000 In the Lancer in just over a year. If I get this job at Olympus that I'm going for, they pay for fuel anyway.nutty wrote:Whats Insurance on a XR6 turbo? also how many km do you do per year? XR6 turbos tend to drink quite abit too
I did notice the XR8's are better on fuel. But most of the ones I've seen up for sale have done too many k's. Up around the 200,000 is just crazy. I haven't checked out the insurance costs yet. Good point, I'll look into it.
That Clio does look like a huge amount of fun... Clarkson didnt like it all that much though, badly put together, bad driving position, steering wheel too big, but the big one that made my ears prick up was that its always noisy even if you put it in 5th while cruising...he did say that it was great fun though.

If you want carefree ownership, great ergonomics and nice build quality then don't get the Renault . If you want an awesome fun little car with lots of toys (auto lights and wipers and climate control etc) and go-kart handling then the Clio is great value for money. There's a fantastic, close owner's community for Renault Sport cars in Oz too.

Re: New Car - Suggestions?
EK they look like a blast, but I think as a daily driver it might get a tad annoying if its always noisey etc. I have basically nailed it down to two options I think....
a Falcon XR8 (anything BA or later)
or a Corolla Sportivo... reckon they would go alright with 141kw. They both seem a good mixture of sensible yet ballsy. Both can be had in my price range with decent km's, and built within the last 8 years so safety should be reasonable.
The only other car I was thinking about was the 2004 VW Golf GTI... however it seems they are reasonably sedate with only 110kw... wasn't till 2005 that they were given a much healthier 147 kw engine. The price of the 05 is just too steep for me sadly.
As much as i'd love an Evo, for the money I have there are really only pre 2000 models... and god knows who has thrashed them or what the true millage is. Might be something to aim for in the future.

Re: New Car - Suggestions?
The Corolla Sportivo doesnt get a great wrap, its motor is lifted from the most recent Celica, its resembles a VTEC motor so you need to rev its ring out before it does anything at all... that and apparently nothing much is done to the steering or suspension, so its a pretty numb drive
The MkIV Golf would greatly benefit from a ECU reflash to get yourself some more grunt... speaking of, is the Polo GTI in your pricerange? same motor as the golf, but likely with a bit less weight, and a bit newer
EDIT: just inside the pricerange, comes with the standard wheels, just get the bonnet "fixed" and your laughing, Chipped to 150kw would make it a pretty quick car

Polo could be fun, they are only 110kw though....

oh I see, he's chipped it. Serious though? 40 more kilowatts from a chip? I'm kinda skeptical.

Re: New Car - Suggestions?
Rather than the Sportivo, I'd look at stretching just a little more for a Mazda SP23 (~2005 models start around $14k). Everything I read about the Sportivo is pretty bad. It may read 141kW on paper, but I seem to recall it doesn't feel like that.
The Mark 4 Golf was not very good. Anything in a Mark 5 is better. Hell, my brother had a Mark 5 FSi like this that was a hoot to drive, you'd be surprised how grunty the NA 2 litre is.

If you think about the year/km/power/money ratio, the 380 is well within that ball game if not leading it
I know it'll be shot down quick, fwd, mitsu, heavy etc...but that's how I selected it and I'm very happy with that choice.
If you're around the central coast you can even come over and test drive it

You could have had my 2003 Impress RS for well under $13k
2.5L flat 4, with lighter flywheel, cold air intake, genuine wrx pedal set and Goodyear eagle f1 tyres.
It may not be as fast as my 180kw liberty in a straight line, but it was great on twisty roads.

Re: New Car - Suggestions?
I agree that the Clio as a daily can be a bit extreme. I'm only considering one as a second car.
From the others mentioned, the polo GTI is a fun little car. Only 110kw but quite torquey and the whole thing is pretty well screwed together. Remember, it's a size below golf, corolla, Mazda3 etc so the power isn't as low as you think. They're good on fuel too even though they need premium. dude.
Beyond that then best bfyb is indeed an XR falcon or SS commodore. Falcons don't hold their value quite as well so are perhaps a better deal.
Performance aside, the first time you sit in a sportivo corolla you'll be put off. Horrivle, cheap interior.
Accord Euros have been mentioned and you should have a drive of one before dismissing them. I absolutely adored mine. 140kw, high 7s 0-100 which isn't hanging around although you'll need to rev it's tits off to get there. It's a vtec yo screamer. Biggest thing for me though, is that it has the best pedal/gearbox action you'll find in a 4 door car bar almost none. Heel and toe is beautifully easy and the weighting and throw of the controls is lovely. Take one for a test drive at least.

Astro is an RS or RX better in the imprezas? Your liberty a GT? I'd love one of them.
Hz your car is in another state! lol and last I heard it was in pieces? How much are you selling it for? If it's under a 100,000km you would be wanting more than I can afford.

EK is the Accord Euro standard at that power? I'll have a look. The reason I worry is my old man doesn't like Hondas. He works in the bearing industry and says they are a bastard to get if they need new bearings. I guess that's not entirely likely though. I'll make sure I check one out.

Re: New Car - Suggestions?
RX is balls (or is that pants?). The only good RS model is the one with the 2.5L motor (last year for that was 2005?), all the other ones have a shitty 2.0L (unless you are talking pre-2001). The Impreza model range goes... GX/R/2.0i, RX, RS, WRX, WRX STI (RV/XV are your "off-road" models). On the inside the RS and WRX are the same in the previous shape (apart from the pedal covers).
My Liberty is the 3.0R (3.0L, 6cyl)... but it's an auto
[Edit] Here is a link to the photo's of my car when it was up for sale... https://picasaweb.google.com/AstrO.sa/I ... fsyMCO6QE#

Accord euro is standard that power dude. Not much really goes wrong with them. Just the usual caveats with service history etc.

Dex, grab a 2004 VT series 2 wagon. Goes like a 1.5t 3.8l would be expected. You can root in the back. Roof racks and some fence palings turns it in to an awesome landscape platform for photography. Goes just about anywhere. Plenty around so they are cheap. And the biggest thing, you could say you drove the same car as me. FUCKING WIN!!!!!!!11111

Haha highly practical I'm sure. Something like that would be the purely sensible option... There's just a little too much rev head in me still to go something completely tame.

0-100 in about 0.15 minutes! Handles like a wagon should. Lower the bastige and put some low profile rubber, spinners, paint the back windows black and whack a Milo tin on the back, and it is anything but tame.
