Re: Pod coffee...
Pod coffee is a big no-no for me. The amount of pods sold is astronomical, and most of them aren't recyclable. I read an article stating that we could already line them up and circle the earth 3.5 times with them.

Wonder how that compares to all the packaging of coffee beans, disposing of used grind & the takeaway cups sold when buying the same product then???DexterPunk wrote:Pod coffee is a big no-no for me. Re: Pod coffee...
I think a good deal of it is recyclable. Whether or not it gets recycled I guess is another issue. I'll probably get a coffee machine this year but I think I'll get a manual one with a grinder.

I tried the Gran Gusto, Mr Smith. It's good but not as strong as I generally like. I'll try Intenso next!

Re: Pod coffee...
Well, got to say, those pods I bought are pretty ordinary. I'm having to use 2 to get a reasonable strength coffee (still substantial saving) and then having to microwave the cup to get it warm enough to drink. The taste is pretty blah, so I may try the Nescafe ones...

Re: Pod coffee...
My recent trip to Vietnam has me hooked on cà phê sữa nóng. Vietnamese coffee is quite different to anything else I've ever had... it's just beautiful. It's largely thanks to the French influence but the beans used are quite different to our coffee, and the roasting process is also different (cooler and slower) so the sugars caramelise and you end up with an almost mocha taste, and the smell is amazing. It's brewed using a French drip, and placed on top of your coffee cup. It's thick and almost syrupy, and takes about 5 minutes to drip through. Apparently it's a bit of an art to pack the coffee in the French drip right so that it doesn't drip too fast or too slow. The last thing they add is sweetened condensed milk which seems to be a little different to the western varieties we have here. The coffee isn't very big, and not very hot either... but you don't mind when you're in hot humid conditions. I've bought most of what I need while in VN to make the coffee, I just need to practice, and find the right ingredients here to replicate it at home. Shouldn't be too hard as there are a lot of asian grocers in the area here.
I'm sure if you've been to VN you will have tried the coffee, but if you haven't, and you go there make sure you do!

Re: Pod coffee...
I understand Vietnamese coffee uses a Robusta bean rather than the Arabica we are used to. This explains why you don't see Vietnamese beans offered a lot in coffee houses. They are regarded by many as a lower grade of bean and they are usually the basis for instant coffee. However, Robusta seems to be popular as an Italian espresso bean so maybe that's the way to get the most authentic flavour. Of course there are probably Vietnamese shops in the major cities which would have it.
Looks like the Vietnamese have that problem solved.
I'm keep to try it. Anyone know a place in Melbourne where I can get one of these things?
Vietnamese coffee might even be worthy of a thread on its own... just sayin'.

I think that's the base, but it's also usually a blend.

Re: Pod coffee...
Instants were normally made from the excess or over roasted, as it was meant to be a cheap way to get rid of the wasted sellable stock, as it gave more profit then giving it away as feed stocks.
Then it became popular, bringing that taste with it, freshly roasted is a whole experience that most never taste.
