I got the hint of the helmet, but discounted one of the drivers from that country because I was sure he had been killed in 1986...turns out I was wrong.
was it Surer that had that massive accident in the Ford thingy, RS200? I haven't heard his name since then so i assumed he died as well.

Righto, here's a slightly tricky one.
Drove for a top-tier team as a pay-driver and then drove a succession of average cars until he quit F1 in the late 70's

Ahh, was I right
this has got me puzzled, I would have agreed with Woodsy's first pick. Last name isn't similar to a motorbike / car brand is it ? grasping

Shinja Nakano? I'm trying to think of Japanese drivers names from ages ago, I have no idea what any of them looked like but it's worth a shot

In your rampant guessing though Woodsy, with macca's assist of saying he had a motorcycle name, you were correct with Aguri Suzuki
Although I'm thinking there needs to be a joke here after all the rampant Japanese name flinging of "all Asians look alike"

There's no way I would have gotten that without Macca's clue, but I'll take it
