Sorry Darren, no idea how I missed that question.DarrenM wrote:30D, nice! What lenses?
I've seen people on dpreview claiming 20k+ shots on their 300D's, so I don't think Macca has to worry
Well Im not sure what lenses as yet. Depends on whats around at the time. I am still tossing up on getting a 5D instead. Full frame sounds good to me.

5D You really have been bitten by the bug bad. As good as the 5D is, its a lot of money. I have a friend that has one, but she is professional photographer. Actually come to think of it, she only kind of has one. Her husband bought it for her for her birthday, however the way she puts it, its like the time Homer bought Marg a bowling ball with homer printed on it.
Still a damn fine bit of kit. At this point I would probably still go the 30D.

Its not a given yet Nige. The 30D is stil lthe favourite choice, just after seeing full frame cameras working, it is tempting. The crop factor of the 300D and 30D is a bit of a bummer I must say. But hey, who knows. 6 months ago I knew nothing about this caper.fourthof5 wrote:5D You really have been bitten by the bug bad. As good as the 5D is, its a lot of money. Yer the full frame is a lure. Why not buy a 35m film SLR. They are cheep at the moment. Although, I must admit. Everytime I shoot with the SLR these days I forget to whined the film onnorbs wrote:Its not a given yet Nige. Pretty much what I will probably do Darren. It would be an extra $2k for the 5D. As I said earlier, I was just floating the idea after seeing a 5D last weekend and then playing with 1 in a shop the other day.DarrenM wrote: Personally I'd rather put the extra cash into lenses rather than the body, but I don't know how much cash you have at hand.
I reckon the following will be on the shopping list.
Canon 30D body.
CANON EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Wide Angle Lens
CANON 70-300IS USM f4-5.6 Zoom lens.
And maybe a good macro lense as well. Will see. I am going to have to buy new filters, hoods, spare battery etc, and it soon adds up.

So you're gonna buy a Porsche Boxter, then stick some spinnaz from K-Mart on it.norbs wrote:I reckon the following will be on the shopping list.

OK it's not that extreme, but the lens is where the majority of the image quality comes from so if you're getting serious, you might want to put a little more in in that department.
A 70-200 f4L would be much better than the 70-300 IMHO and it's only $100-200 more. I haven't missed the extra reach of the 75-300. I certainally haven't missed the slowness at full zoom.
From what I have seen the 17-85 isn't too impressive either. Huge barrel distortion and soft on the wide end, a small amount of CA. I certainally wouldn't swap my 17-40 for one. It has a little barrel distortion at the wide end, but other than that it's been perfect for me.
Hoods come with the lenses.

Fair enough Darren. Looks like the 75-200mm is the go. A few forums have said the same thing. Added to that, the 75-300 has a few issues.
What about the 17-55 F/2.8 IS as a walk around lense?
