Not yet. Meant to be only for iPhone devs. When I did it you needed your UID registered, a Mac, iTunes 9.2 beta and of course the iOS 4 GM. There might be a hack out now, I haven't looked. Re: the New iphone
i heard the new iPhone has the aerial wrapped around the outside of the body, it'd be good if they improve reception, and also battery life obviously. The main issues with the current phones.

True, the stainless steel band is both the primary structure and the antenna system. The larger section is for UTMS & GSM and the smaller section is for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS.w00dsy wrote:i heard the new iPhone has the aerial wrapped around the outside of the body

Re: the New iphone
3 do it quite often on other phones... but my guess is that iPhones are so popular they wont do it. I'll be 12 months in to my contract about when this new iPhone gets released.. i got the 3GS only a few weeks after they came out.

WWDC Keynote about the iPhone 4.0
I noticed no discussion on the WWDC Keynote about the iPhone 4.0, so here is a nice article

why were they running on the same wifi connection that everyone else was running? Maybe next time they'll have their own so they don't have that embarrassment.

News from the geeks in mobiles at Telstra say the new iPhone is WAY better as far as reception goes than the 3GS. It might even make a decent phone now. Still waiting to hear from the Optus geek I know.

Re: the New iphone
norbsy-worbsy, would you mind asking your mobile geeks if they know the new Field Test Mode code to dial? Calling *3001#12345#* in iOS 4 doesn't work anymore (for me). I ask because some people have reported holding the iPhone 4 (in your hands) can short out the antennas, resulting in the reception bars dropping quickly to No Service.norbs wrote:News from the geeks in mobiles at Telstra say the new iPhone is WAY better as far as reception goes than the 3GS.

Could be a bucket load of things at this point. Bad batch, software not taking correct values, weak reception to start with, etc. The issue is going around the forums with so much misinformation (like normal, cause everyones an IT genius).AstrO wrote:It could be that he has a faulty phone??? Its not really a new problem because you've always been able to cover the antenna location with you hands and the signal usually drops (every model any OS revision). All depends on actual reception strength and your provider.

I will ask. Whether they will tell me until its release is another thing. They wont even show it to me at this point in time. They usually drive down my way under the guise of field testing to have a beer with me, but are strapped for time at the moment.
Apparently I am not supposed to let people know about the phones like I did with the HTC they showed me.
I will send them that YouTube clip and ask them for a response.

Re: the New iphone
Ok, they won't tell me the codes, any of them until they are out of their NDA.
One of them did ask if I had been reading Gizmodo when I asked about the aerial. He sent this link through. http://gizmodo.com/5571171/iphone-4-los ... tenna-band" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They can make it happen on one of 3 test units. But he said you have to squeeze it quite hard. A colleague of his at 3 says they have a unit that does it easily. Doesn't sound to good after I read the Gizmodo site.
It was mentioned that it will happen on a 3GS if you do it right.

Re: the New iphone
Hopefully it is as one of the people who commented - a manufacturing fault rather than an inherent design flaw. I'm actually looking forward to getting one of these when my plan comes up in December so as much as I dislike the way Apple does things, I really do hope they fix it!

Re: the New iphone
You can see in that Gizmondo vid he's not "gently holding the phone" as he says. his thumb is pressed into it. Looks like he's pushing on the sides to me.

Re: the New iphone
And in basic terms... It's an inherent design flaw! Confirmed by Apple. How sad.
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

Re: the New iphone
I can understand how the problem could go unnoticed by Apple in open testing. Most of the time (I would assume) the iPhone 4 would have had it's identity covered when out in public, which coincidently hides the error. As long as this is the only design flaw then I don't think it's going to stop the die hard Apple fans from picking one up (if they already haven't). It's no red ring of death, that's for sure (one of the reasons I held off on buying an Xbox 360 for so long).
[Edit] Just read the response given by Steve Jobs, he is such a tool. Someone needs to create an image with Steve Jobs pointing at a user with the problem saying "You're doing it wrong!".

Re: the New iphone
Anyways, finally someone has some more information on the technical side of reception link. Also interesting is not all people are having the "your holding it wrong" problem. In the UK and Aus theres people reporting they can't get the reception bars to drop.
