Anyone watching the stream? They've just confirmed a successful flight, hover and landing.

Yep. WFH this week so got it on.
They have an animated gif of it taking off and landing taken from the rover. Absolutely flipping amazing.

Gravity's really weird on Mars isn't it
So cool. Sounded like everything went as well as it could have. They got the photo from the downward facing navigation camera:

Video
Just to get off the ground, the rotors had to be spinning at 2500rpm. A normal helicopter is about 450!

This thing only weighs 1.8kg. They said the technology should scale up quite simply now they know it works, so a bigger one could potentially carry things around.
I was curious what speed the typical domestic quadcopter rotors spin at and they are well over 10k rpm.

Re: Space Stuff and the Such.
Wonder where this will actually land!!!
We expect it to reenter sometime between the eighth and 10th of May. And in that two-day period, it goes around the world 30 times. The thing is traveling at like 18,000 miles an hour. And so if you're an hour out at guessing when it comes down, you're 18,000 miles out in saying where."
Still, the ocean remains the safest bet for where the debris will land, he said, just because it takes up most of the Earth's surface.

Re: Space Stuff and the Such.
I missed the livestream driving into work this morning - had a quick look when I got to work and thought it hadn't taken off as it was still upright
From what I read it wasn't too long before people were out there doing post flight checks. Hopefully not too long before the next test.

Re: Space Stuff and the Such.
They're getting really rather good at this now. I'd also say that I think they've made NASA look a bit archaic. They've come in with new thinking about how you can do this cheaply and using technology to autoland etc.

Re: Space Stuff and the Such.
It is extraordinary how quickly a landing is now the expected outcome rather than the optimistic one.
I still watched the clips this morning in total awe. I love what it means for the future too. It feels like the culmination of a sci-fi fantasy to me but for the kids who become the next engineers, this is their starting point.

Re: Space Stuff and the Such.
Got the live stream on. It seems very well produced.
Edit: What am I saying. The guy owns a TV and film business. He should know how to put a decent show on.
