Re: Your cool photos.
I'm currently away in Wilsons Promontory. Fantastic place. I went outside tonight to take some shots of the stars and notice the Aurora had fired up!

Yeah I'm part of an aurora alert email subscription. I'm just usually never in the right place when it's happening... or I have work and can't really head out. Just luck of the draw that I caught it this time.

Re: Your cool photos.
How high res do you need to go Shaun? I have to say, they are a bit grainy as they were taken at ISO6400. But I should be able to give you around 4000-5000px in width.
This one is a little less grainy. I only just got a chance to have a look at this one properly. Taken over about 30 mins.

Awesome
Is that one 30 min exposure, or multiple exposures?

Re: Your cool photos.
Nah just one 30 min exposure. You're better off doing multiples and making a composite, but it all kinda happened so quickly. I actually pretty badly stuffed it up. It was way over exposed. You can see where the green yellow area just above the trees has kinda lost detail trying to bring it all back down. There's a bit of tidying up as well, and some enhancement in ACR. But that's not far off what the camera was seeing. Strangely enough, you could only just make it all out with the naked eye. Just the reds though, and very faint. I could have easily missed it all if I wasn't out there already taking some star shots and noticed it.

Yeah should be ok... might be a tad grainy. PM me your email, and I'll shoot 'em over.

Re: Your cool photos.
We had a lunar eclipse here last night. I took a 'factual' approach but I need to learn to look for the arty shots too. Maybe next time.

and saw this leaf hanging in mid air on a spider thread. Not sure I got the sort of picture I thought it should produce but this wasn't bad

Re: Your cool photos.
Great macros, especially the dragonfly over the light spotted pond.
If I may say, on the moon composite, you can see the difference between the general background and the backgrounds from the individual moon pictures. Apart from that, it's a nice document of the rare event ... and kudos for getting up at 3am for it, Lord knows I didn't.

These were from a vintage ploughing marathon - manual focussing my adapted 50mm in the middle of the night ... admittedly tractors don't move that fast but at ISO 12800 it's pretty dark ...

And I think I'm about done spamming up the joint.

I'll try another re-edit.Swain OHaw wrote: If I may say, on the moon composite, you can see the difference between the general background and the backgrounds from the individual moon pictures. I did change it last night to get a better match. I've just put my monitor brightness up to the max and I can't see a difference but I'll look at it again.
Thanks.

Weird that it appears here and not on what I assume is a much better monitor than what I'm using!

Re: Your cool photos.
What I haven't tried is the blending modes on PS. Maybe rather than colour matching or trying to delete the surrounds for each one I can find the right blend mode that will remove it for me. I'll have another play tonight.

Re: Your cool photos.
ok, to see the outlines you were seeing, I had to whack my home monitor up to 100% bright and tip it 45 degrees
I've edited a new version in to the post above (found the 'lighten' blending mode seemed to hide the boxes). Let me know if that looks better.

Re: Your cool photos.
Haha. The lengths we go to ... all absolutely fine now, and I've tried tipping mine and moving my head around it, and it looks good from every angle! Nice work on it, of course, by the way.
You mentioned looking for the more artistic shots ... I think a lot of that depends on your vantage point, the more creative ones I have seen seem to be shot from somewhere down low with a silhouette of something up higher - somewhere like Glastonbury Tor where you have a low lying area and a prominent monument atop a conveniently placed hill (thanks nature). Requires a bit of planning perhaps, but also requires having something suitable to use for the shot.
Things like the shot of the guy looking through a telescope (I think I saw that on the Guardian) seem a bit faked to me as well. I realise there's still a sky full of stars out when there's a super lunar eclipse but why would the guy with a telescope have it turned away 90 degrees at that moment? He could surely turn back to said sky full of stars a few minutes later when the once-in-a-generation event is over. (I know nothing about astronomy so there could be a less cynical explanation.)
