Minecraft 1.8 upcoming Features Discussion

Post by NeilPearson »

All this info has been stolen from the minecraft forums!

1.8 is going to the be the adventure update.
notch wrote:Since 1.8 is still a significant time away, we’re going to have to stop being as secretive about it as we have. We’ll provide information about it as we go, but we’ll keep actual details secret. So, for example, we could say “added two new colors” without saying which ones, or “testing experience and leveling to see if it’s fun” without giving details on exactly how it works.

The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.

Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.
Confirmed in 1.8

- A new mob. (A very "scary" one! (A boss, possibly?)) Tumblr

- New mossy cobblestone texture.

- NPC villages/Ruins! Tumblr Picture! Picture!

- More complex combat.Tumblr

- New lighting. picture Tumblr

- More unique and interesting world generation. Tumblr

- Gamma slider. Twitter

Likely Features:

- New launcher. Twitter

- Food in buckets / stacked food. Twitter

- Secret stuff. Picture

- Underground ravines. Picture

- Big mushrooms. Picture

- Experience orb. (Possibly part of the "potions" ordeal) Picture

- Sheep will regenerate wool. (1.9?)

Speculations/Pending:

- Most likely for 1.9, but in the future Notch plans to make it so you can toggle different modes within Minecraft, such as Adventure, Survival, and Creative. Twitter (1.9?)

- A moderator on a survival server can play as if they were in creative. Twitter (1.9?)

- Biome-complient water. Picture in 1.7 FIles

- Fence gates. Twitter

- Moss spread.

- Default hi-res texture support. Twitter

- Interactive mobs. Farm animals, for example.

- Terraria features. Twitter

- New SFX in caves and nether.

- More nether things.

- Spikes. Twitter

- Natural cobwebs.

Unconfirmed:

- Sky dimension. (.class file still remains in code.)

- Modding API.

- 3rd person front view. (Opposite of F5.)

- More underwater content.

Release Date:

- A long time, 1.7 Just came out!

I wonder if this update will include lighting that will come from a hand held torch or lantern. Dual wielding would be great. sword in 1 hand and torch in the other lighting the way as you go.

Villages and ruins will be good. Fence gates are a good thing. looks ugly to put a door in there. And stacked food will be good too.

I doubt it, i have read from notch that would kill bandwith on SMP as it would need chunk updates all the time.
it would be awesome though, just like oblivion!

Coming soon to 1.8: hold-to-charge bows
Wonder if that will mean tnt arrows and such.

Ive been a bit quiet on the server and others seem quieter. Still Im not sick of MC, I think Im just keen on the new features coming so Im not enthused at 1.7

if you follow the path of that ravine it looks like there is a massive ravine or something up the top.

Also

Notch posted on twitter, that 1.8 wont be out to after PAX. (whatever that is, some expo...) which is August 26th to 28th...

So its AGES away!

Looks interesting - maybe they'll steal blocks from your house or the surrounding area? Or even use blocks as a way of getting into your house and then attacking?
It's been nice, chaps.

You mean start fires in the main living room and call it a sacred site.
Some play it safe on the merry-go-round, others go for the thrills of the roller-coaster.

I have a joke for you. I have a prediction that you are going to walk into a bar, my prediction was wrong and your wallet is gone.

Fark this sounds awesome
notch on twitter wrote:The Endermen are peaceful. If you look straight at them, they freeze and look at you. When you look away again, they run fast. And teleport.

Some time in September sounds likely.

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
"Mojang will be at PAX. We'll have the first playable version of the Adventure Update there, and it will be released to the public once we've adressed the feedback we get at PAX."

PAX is 26th-28th August. How long after that will depend on how much addressing of feedback they need do.

Pocket edition looks like it would work much better on a psp2 with the dual thumbsticks.

Sweet, looks like the terrain generator might get a nice overhaul in this next update.
