No idea here, whenever I try it I feel like I'm about a nanosecond away from cracking my skull open.

A lot depends on your bike set up. See that guy just sitting and rolling means he has a sweet spot where he can just balance the bike. I grew up with a kid that could do the same on my bike with the seat raised.
I always found it easier to mono up a slight incline. But I was crap at it.
Peter Sagan is the current mono king in the peloton.
No hands.

And no feet down a ramp.

Robbie McEwen was well know for doing them as well.
And this is the winner for mine.

I used to be able to, then I took a pedal to the knee.
I remember watching someone (McEwan, or Evans?) do mono hops in the middle of a pack of media! Crazy good!

i'm usually pretty damn pleased with myself if i can pop the front wheel up an inch or so to clear an obstacle.. Doing a mono is a little beyond my skill set!

It's all about trial and error and finding the balance point on your bike. Unfortunately the error part of the equation has scary consequences when clipped in so I never really muck around trying it. However when I'm out on the mtb trails I find myself doing small manuals over rollers in order to jump the next roller without really thinking about it.
One thing I'm getting closer to mastering is trackstands, I think both skills go along way to improving your balance and core strength and therefore becoming a better rider.

I remember when I was about 15 measuring mine... hit just over 400m I was proud of that at the time :P
Can still do okay ones, but no where near the balance I had back then. I struggle to manual... need to pedal
Hats off to Robbie McEwen for no hands on a roadie.

I can manual bmx's quite easy, it's just practise and balance, a lot of pumping with the legs. Messing about on mates bmx bikes recently I'm good for about maybe 20 metres, I used to be able to do blocks at a time.
Mountain bikes are another thing all together, I can get about 5 metres if that, and it's only about a 10% success rate, the bigger the bike the harder it is. And rear suspension makes it worse. There is no secret though, it's all practise. Maybe get a bmx and learn on that 1st because its a lot easier, especially on real short end freestyle type bikes

The right bike definitely helps... some have an awkward balance point, where others just sit there, no worries.
