Facts from the last race
Lewis Hamilton took his 28th career win at Monza. It was his sixth win of the year – the most races he has ever won in a season.

Team mate Nico Rosberg has won four times yet retains a 22-point lead in the drivers’ championship with 175 left to be won.

There remains a strong possibility Hamilton could end the year with more wins than Rosberg but fewer points. This has happened on 12 previous occasions in F1 history, but only once in the last two decades.

On that occasion, in 2008, Hamilton was the beneficiary, pipping Felipe Massa to the title by a single point despite having won one race fewer than his rival. However Hamilton was controversially stripped of a victory at Spa that year, which was handed to Massa.

Hamilton set his 36th pole position and 17th fastest lap – the latter giving him as many as Rubens Barrichello. This was the fourth pole, fastest lap and win ‘hat trick’ of his career.

Rosberg followed him home for Mercedes’ seventh one-two of the season. They have six races left to beat the all-time record of ten set by McLaren in 1988.

Alonso failed to score a point for the first time this year after his Energy Recovery System failed. That’s only the second time out of his 90 starts for Ferrari that a reliability problem has forced him out of a race. His last such failure was 86 races ago, when his engine failed in the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix.

There are 64 ways Hamilton and Rosberg can finish 1-2 in the remaining races. In only 6 of those would Hamilton be champion.

Penalty points so far
Marcus Ericsson 5
Jules Bianchi 4
Pastor Maldonado 4
Kevin Magnussen 4
Valtteri Bottas 2
Adrian Sutil 2
Jean-Eric Vergne 1

If Hamilton comes-round to winning this championship, it'd be one of the more memorable I can recall!

Vettel was a long way behind in 2010 and came from nowhere to win.

That was a great qualifying session I thought. Didn't think the Merc's were going to get it for a change but they proved me wrong.

The cheers for Hamilton and Ricciardo were huge.

great burn by Brundle on the gridwalk

Horner: it's a shame you're told old to have driven here
Brundle: it's a shame you were too slow to get into Formula 1

Lewis is going to have to work for this now.

Hamilton deserves that. Lot of pace in that Merc showed here.

What a drive by Vergne and Perez at the end too.

Vettel had the right idea in my opinion. He should have gone for it at the end instead of saving tyres. On super softs he would have got his spots back at least and who knows what might have happened if they at least pushed Lewis.

Shame Dan had engine problems as well.

Title is very interesting now.

Really dont care if Loowis or Nico wins it this year, just want it to be a tight fight till the end.

Me too. I don't like the race to be compromised but that was an excellent result for the title fight. Winner takes all in Abba Dabba would be excellent.

Or Riccardo close the gap somehow to under 50 by then and both Merc's smash each other out :)

It's a big what if... But imagine Ham got a puncture on that front wing that caused the safety car, and Ricky didn't have issues. Could have made the points situation interesting. He's still a long way back, but not far off the mark really. He's had such an impressive season.
