Today's one, which I have seen several times lately - diffuse used instead of defuse.

Since seeing this thread, I have been doing some reading. The Wikipedia is fantastic. It is a bit like Mondegreens for sentences instead of music.

That one from Abbott is sort of on the very limit I think. I think he just used the wrong word.

I seem to remember Dogberryism from high school English. God knows why.

The other biggie for me is "honing in" when people mean "homing in"

I had a boss once who called us into a meeting room to give us a ‘hands up’ on some news. She even wave her hands at the wrist ‘mammy’ style as she said it. I internally lol’d for some time.

Ah, the 'mute point' mistake. Another one that grinds my gears. Even moot point is used wrongly - it means uncertain or debatable or irrelevant. People use it for the reverse - ie that its not up for debate. And worse when they say the point is mute.
