Malapropisms that shit me

Post by smithcorp »

I'm starting a list.

Today's one, which I have seen several times lately - diffuse used instead of defuse.
another demonstrator put his arms around her to try to diffuse any potential confrontation

Since seeing this thread, I have been doing some reading. The Wikipedia is fantastic. It is a bit like Mondegreens for sentences instead of music.
Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott once claimed that no one "is the suppository of all wisdom" (i.e., repository or depository).[25] Similarly, as reported in New Scientist, an office worker had described a colleague as "a vast suppository of information". The worker then apologised for his "Miss-Marple-ism" (i.e., malapropism).[26] New Scientist noted this as possibly the first time anyone had uttered a malapropism for the word malapropism itself.
That one from Abbott is sort of on the very limit I think. I think he just used the wrong word.

I seem to remember Dogberryism from high school English. God knows why.

Agree (and sneak peak is one that goes on my list, as i see it a lot).

The other biggie for me is "honing in" when people mean "homing in"

I had a boss once who called us into a meeting room to give us a ‘hands up’ on some news. She even wave her hands at the wrist ‘mammy’ style as she said it. I internally lol’d for some time.

It took ages to convince my wife that it was postpone and not postphone. Her argument was that you ring someone to put off your plans, then said 'what's a pone?' when I laughed at her logic.

Ah, the 'mute point' mistake. Another one that grinds my gears. Even moot point is used wrongly - it means uncertain or debatable or irrelevant. People use it for the reverse - ie that its not up for debate. And worse when they say the point is mute.
