Re: Oculus Rift
Interesting. That shows me pwned on 10 sites, but I've only used 2 of them. Already knew about those breaches, but I use different passwords everywhere anyway.
Makes you wonder how many breaches haven't been made public.

Re: Oculus Rift
All the other mixed reality headsets as well. They're supposed to launch Oct 17th. The Samsung one on Nov10th.
We don't know when they'll get SteamVR support though, so there won't be much gaming for them at launch. Just minecraft and Arizona Sunshine from the windows store I guess.
The samsung one is very appealing for sims. Higher res and higher FOV. Hopefully they'll have a demo unit in the Sydney samsung store.

It's interesting how quiet Occulus & HTC / Steam are as surely they must gave Gen2 models coming?

Re: Oculus Rift
Oculus just held their Connect conference. They announced Oculus Go, which is a mobile headset equivalent to GearVR, but without the need for a phone. Android standalone headset similar to what Google and Samsung are building.
They also showed an update to the Santa Cruz prototype, which might end up being Rift 2. It's also also mobile, but with inside out tracking. No mention of whether it will have wireless connection to support PC gaming though. Dev kits will be out next year. Consumer version in 2019 I think.
Dash looks like a nice feature. It'll allow you to overlay windows on top of games. Someone brought up the idea of having a webcam overlay so you can see what's going on in the room while you have the headset on.

Re: Oculus Rift
Reading this thread on reddit, seems Santa Cruz won't be Rift 2. So their hardware plans for PC are still a mystery.
I spoke with Nate Mitchell yesterday (Head of Rift at Oculus) and asked him about how the strategies of the headsets do or don't overlap. From his explanation, it sounded very much like Santa Cruz and Rift are being developed quite separately. In fact, he said that Santa Cruz won't be a 'Rift' product when it launches. He made the distinction that "Rift is our PC product." So it sounds like Santa Cruz is being treated like a high-end standalone and a mobile product (which makes sense too as it's built on mobile SoC and almost certainly Android). With that said, I'm sure that any of the easily transferable hardware learnings like ergonomics, lenses, and displays, are likely to be shared between products where sensible.

Re: Oculus Rift
Oculus let the certificate they sign their drivers with expire causing the headset to stop working. They've released a fix which will install a new version of the software.

Re: Oculus Rift
It effectively bricked every headset for nearly a whole day. No way it was intentional. Since it's a windows certificate it affected offline users as well.
Not sure why you'd avoid updates anyway. They've been making some good improvements lately, like being able to move games to different drives.

You can put your foil hat away. They don't give you the ability to opt out of updates anywaypixelboy wrote:Sounds like a calculated move to force updates.
1. I never assume a conspiracy when plain-old incompetence explains everything.
2. They're handing out $15 Oculus store credit to those who used their Rift since Feb 1st as compensation

Re: Oculus Rift
I'll be interested to find out how they go. My main worry with something like that is how well the rift and the lenses would hold up to semi-frequently being removed for other users.smithcorp wrote:My VR Lens Lab glasses had arrived yesterday - bad timing!

I didn't get the inserts. Rather they are spectacles you wear. The shape and size fits with the rift and they have an elastic strap that goes around the back of your head.Cursed wrote:I'll be interested to find out how they go. Nicely made and adjustable for distance off your face. I tried the fit last night and it was good. I'll post up a photo.

Re: Oculus Rift
So, I have a pair of old, small frame glasses that I currently use with the Rift. My biggest problems are that the nose pads end up pushed fairly hard into my nose and the glasses can end up getting pushed close enough to my eyes that my eyelashes brush them, leaving an oily residue over time.

Re: Oculus Rift
Looks good although right now I would be happy with an Oculus HMD with the same screens as in the Vive Pro and the Samsung Odyssey. I would upgrade for that.
