You can run it for free if you dont need all the bells and whistles.
otherwise, just grab a cheap key off eBay. I have done that a few times now.

Don't forget that the OS runs *everything*. Personally I don't think the usually available prices are ridiculous. I always figure it to be a cost of building a PC that can play the games I want as well as I want them played.
Also, you probably want an OEM version, which is to say, you will be supporting it, not phoning up Microsoft when you don't know how to delete a file. You can get those from any PC parts shop.
When I revived an old PC and had to get an OS for it, I did the same thing Norbs mentioned - ebay. People on there used to buy bulk licenses and sell them out relatively cheap - again these had no Microsoft support. I thought Microsoft made this harder to do though.

If you have a Windows 7 or 8 key they work with a new install.

I have a legit registered Win 7 key- so if I upgrade can I use that? Or with Ebay keys, is there a risk they've been used before?

Well, looks like it worked - I didn't have to do anything other than run the update tool. Win 10 installed and it shows as activated (guess my Win 7 64 license was okay for Win 10 as well). It's only Win 10 Home, but seems to be working!
